Caroline Robertson (previously
Caroline Hannam) began rowing at the PRC in 2003, Caroline started rowing in 1993 at the
age of thirteen for Lytton High School and the Gisborne Rowing club.
|
During Carolines time at the Gisborne club John Kinder and Ross Webb coached her crew, including:
- 1995 Maadi Cup - U15 4x Silver,
- 1997 NISS Champs - U17 4x Silver and U17 1x Bronze,
- 1997 50th Maadi Cup - U17 4x Silver and Reserve NZJ trials
Caroline rowed for Gisborne club until she
was 18. “For anyone that hasn’t rowed in Gisborne, training was
held on the Waipoa River; you can row approximately 2k up river and 2k down
river. There are a couple of straits, but none are larger that 700 meters
long, most of the time you are rowing around corners, or navigating your boat
through bridges. There are a few obstacles to rowing in Gisborne; exploding
dead sheep floating down the river, sharks, stray turtles, mud crabs, fishing
lines and Maori boys jumping off bridges to name but a few” says Caroline.
Her crews never had ANY regatta's in Gisborne, “usually the first regatta
of the season was in Wairoa (1hours drive) and then Hawkes bay, Blue lakes,
and then we would go to Karapiro for the various club/school champs”
says Caroline.
While at University Caroline rowed casually for Massey, and for Gisborne during
the Holidays.
In 2003 Caroline saw the light and joined the best rowing club in the world,
Caroline says that “Petone generates a great club culture, and the fact
that there are so many opportunities to practice racing against other Wellington
crews; and the lack of exploding sheep, makes it a great place to row”.
